Alan Jones

Hi, I’m Alan!

I’m an online product strategist with a background in communications, product management, editorial and creative marketing

I help our clients map out what their web business should offer, determine what it needs to do, and craft the communications that will explain this to consumers, employees, investors, advertisers and of course, the geekosphere.

How’d I get to here? I caught a lucky break in the early ’90s and decided this internet thing might be big. I left my job as the editor of a Mac magazine, started web publishing and soon learned nobody else knew anything either. By the time there was such a thing as an internet professional, I was one.

I’ve worked for online businesses large and small, been an employee and a founder, worked in product management and communication roles for online businesses for more than ten years. I co-produced Australia’s first online soap opera, was the first web producer hired to work on MSN’s Sydney Sidewalk and was Yahoo! Australia & NZ’s second hire. When I left Yahoo! in 2002 I was Product Director, South Asia, responsible for managing production teams delivering a variety of products across the region.

There’s more: my professional history, resume and professional network are on Xing and LinkedIn. You can also find some of the highlights, lowlights and everyday reflections of my life on Facebook, Flickr and Twitter. You’ll find most of my blogging at Doing Words.

Away from work I’m passionate about the environment, music, film and books. I operate a small online baby products store at Milkooler and a micro-music label at Littoral Records. I play guitar, bring up the rear in a variety of endurance sports and play a mean defensive centre in twice-weekly basketball competition. I chase my son and his dog to unwind.

I love working at Pollenizer because we live what we do. The technologies, strategies and techniques we apply to your business come from our own hard-won experience building businesses online. I love that we invest in our portfolio companies whenever possible so that we’re sharing risk and reward and building something great together.
